Fruity Bravia HDTVs priced

By Philip Wong, CNET Asia

SINGAPORE--You may have read about these Japanese offerings in our past coverage, or even caught a glimpse of some of them in stores. The Bravia S-, V- and W-series LCD HDTVs are now ready to ship in their full dazzling shades and wide selection of sizes. We had an upclose experience with a roundup of these flat panels, plus a sneak preview of the company's revolutionary glass speakers at a Sony press launch today.

If you're a fan of the Japanese company's original floating glass design, its latest "draw the line" rendition might be an exciting addition to its new 2008 Bravias. The concept is centered on a stripe of clear see-through bezel sandwiched between a thin panel frame and streamlined speakers. The material also houses an array of operational indicators beamed internally, which produce an interesting "in the air"-like special effect.

Following it past traditions, most of the models are available in a variety of shades to closely match your personality and home decor. The entire W-series, in particular, offer a subtle sparkling-blue finish a.k.a. Midnight Blue, while the 32-inch "V" comes in Blazing Red, Pure White and Elegant Brown. The "S" 20-incher, on the other hand, stands out with a blend of Youthful Green, Charming Pink, Refreshing Blue, Cheerful Orange and Sleek Silver.

Putting aside the awfully ambiguous-sounding shades (Youthful Green? Err?), Sony has further upgraded the 40- and 46-inch V- and S-series to full-HD, with an impressive 33,000:1 dynamic contrast to boot. To spice up the W- and S-series, there're the Digital Media Port and addons for multimedia streaming and simplified TV remote playback. Example: A S$159 (US$117.06) TDM-BT1 wireless Bluetooth dongle, S$99 (US$72.89) TDM-IP10 and S$159 (US$117.06) TDM-IP1 iPod dock.

Also on display was the upcoming Sountina glass loudspeaker. The Sountina won't be reaching our shores anytime soon, though it's definitely a fabulous showpiece to jazz up your personal space sonically as well as visually. This Star Wars lightsaber lookalike has omni-directional 360-degree soundstage and a couple of exotic X factors ranging from a funky glass tweeter to an attractive "organic" glass tube. Lastly, we're awaiting Sony's confirmation on the possibility of a flagship Bravia X4 in the coming months. For the time being, you'll just have to settle with the 2007 X300/350.
