Digital follies
Apr 24, 2008 14:26
I'm thinking of buying the Nikon D40. The D80 apparently is a step up, but digital technology is just not really worth paying extra for these days. You're better off, when it comes to purchasing a digital SLR camera, spending the money on lens or travel. A good analog camera is a lifetime investment, but a digital camera simply isn't. Give it a few years and it just starts to get annoying.
I have started modelling in 3D again. Finally. Luxology's Modo is a beautiful, beautiful program. I open Maya and I feel sick. I open Modo and I feel like I really have to play with it. Good design has so often been compromised, I feel, and is still being compromised in a lot of software. You can't rule the world with bad design, trust me.
Thoughts on creating a visual language

I designed a little game a few days ago. It's about network effects and the flow of information through links to nodes, and the infection rate. I thought it would be fun to see how you could grow a network. The nodes are really representative of life forms, and the links the chains that keep them together and spread valuable changes along to keep each node alive. I'd like to build it and present it as a single person player, a sort of arcade game on a touchscreen surface with really intuitive drag-and-drop and pull sensations.

My god. You must have seen the Greg Craven video on YouTube about Global Warming. You can get it here.
It's very noble, but what I don't like about it is that if we take action, and Global Warming is not caused by human action, or is not a reality anyway, that the downside is some sort of economic drawback.

Uploading conciousness

So someone pointed me to an article in the Guardian about the Blue Brain, which is supposed to be a simulation of the neocortex in mammals. The idea is to model a neo cortical colum, which consists of about 10,000 neurons.
On the site, they say they are modelling it for the sake of medical research. So we can study brain dysfunction. After all, mental ills like depression are primarily the ills for the develop world, and there is a lot of money in the developed world, and therefore it's a good field within medicine to apply the tax dollars of the developed world to. Curing people is always a good reason if you want some money to fund really cool research. And this is pretty cool.

About Isabella Chen
Isabella Chen is a practising digital artist, working with digital tools to create art and hacking tools to make art. Ironically, she makes a living writing about these tools. Mostly because people seem to be far more interested in how they can use them to create their own content. Before technology exploded in her face, she used to write about social issues. But ever since Chris Anderson let slip that Sillicon Valley was the forefront of culture, she's gone into writing about technology. It's cool, and it drives our lives, and many of us live for it. Plus, there's always the appeal of the intelligent machines that can do your chores for you, and the virtual stimulation machine. Not to be confused with the virtual simulation machine. She has a personal interest in that one.
