Do laptops with metallic chassis leak electricity?

Jul 22, 2008

Question on Notebooks:

Is it true that some notebooks with metal chassis leak a slight electrical charge when they are plugged to the mains? It is said you will get a slight tingling sensation when you touch the notebook. Is that dangerous to health in the long run? How can I resolve the problem?

A properly functioning laptop should not be leaking electricity to the metal chassis. If you feel any electrical current from the body, you should send the unit for servicing immediately.

As for health risks, we have not heard of anyone receiving serious injuries from this issue. To minimize the risk, you should use a three-pin plug at all times to ensure that the unit is properly grounded. Do also refrain from handling the notebook with wet hands.
